Tsunami Warning System
Destruction from tsunamis can be minimized by the use of alert systems. An international tsunami
warning system among the Pacific Rim countries gives them 3-14 hours notice before the arrival of destructive waves.
The Indian Ocean nations do not have an alert system. India said that a system would be installed and it would take
2-2 1/2 years to put into place. A locally genrated tsunami can reach a nearby shore in less than 10 minutes.
This would not be sufficient time for the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center or for local authorities to issue a warning.
For those who live near the coast, the shaking of the ground is a warning that a tsunami may be imminent.
