The 2004 Asian Tsunami

Another example of a tsunami is the Asian Tsunami of December 2004.  This tsunami was caused by a great earthquake that occurred on December 26, 2004.  The magnitude of this earthquake was 9.0 and occurred off the West Coast of Northern Sumatra.  This earthquake was the fourth largest earthquake in the world since 1900 and the largest since 1964.  This earthquake triggered several massive tsunamis that affected several countries throughout South and Southest Asia.

More than 3 million people were in need of aid in Asia and Africa.  The death toll rose dramatically as rescue workers found the remains of entire villages in Indonesia, which was the nation worst hit, which accounted for more than half of the casualties.  According to the National Disaster Relief Coordination Agency, the number of people confirmed dead from the December 26, 2004 tsunami in April 2005 was 126,915 people while 37,063 were listed as missing.

The countries that were affected were Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Maldives, Somalia, Myanmar and Seychelles.
